For consideration is a rare antique cast iron Cap Gun with a beautiful patina and is in excellent overall condition. I dont know a lot about antique cap guns but I believe this gun is something special. The gun is made by Stevens and appears in on one side of the gun and the opposite side has the patent date. However the rivet goes through the year so Im not sure of the date.
The gun has the hammer, trigger and what I call an extended lever all on one piece. A result the gun cannot cocked like a normal cap gun. Also the gun does not have a cap holder with the anvil or means to hold one with the hammer.Instead it has a fairly deep vertical well or socket. The hammer is round with a flat face and closely fits in the socket. With all these factors I believe that this gun predates the use of paper caps.
I believe that powder is placed in the socket and the extended lever is snapped or used to produce the needed pressure to detonate them powder. It appears that the rivets may be replacements. The gun has a extra nice original finish with excellent scrollwork on most of the gun including the hammer, trigger, and extended lever. This gun is not capable of firing a projectile and is fitted with the requires orange barrel plug Your interest is appreciated.
