Mattel PLANET OF THE APES Fanner 50 Twin Cap Gun & Holster Set + Gorilla Mask

  

Please see all 11 pictures This is the last and best piece from a collection of vintage Mattel cap guns I had acquired from a former Mattel employee years ago. Offering this set of never fired PLANET OF THE APES Fanner 50 Cap Gun pistols by Mattel with the original vinyl mask. When the licensing flood gates opened up in 1974 for the PLANET OF THE APES franchise, Mattel did something very cool with a few of their earlier successful toy guns.

They reissued them with new packaging and a unique and clever added patina appropriate for the APES line. Mattel released the Fanner 50 cap gun pistol with a new weathered bronze finish that was unique to this particular line and the brown stag grips. They then added the Gorilla Ape mask to complete the effect. They also did 2 plastic rifles with masks. Condition : Both cap pistols are unfired, so there is no cap residue or oxidation in the mechanism or anywhere.

This set is overall in excellent and super clean condition. The pistols are very clean with tight, working springs and only the slightest of rubs from the holster on one. The brown stag grips are excellent with no cracks.

Interesting to note, is that the pistols have slightly different patina. One is more matte, slightly darker and the other a bit more glossy. One grip is cast solid dark brown and the other has light brown underneath and what looks like scuffs on purpose to add to the patina effect.

Coming from the Mattel insider, they may be examples of 2 different directions Mattel was going to go with this. I cant say one or the other is a proto, but I find it interesting. The holster is very nice with clean original leg ties or tassels and also waist adjustment ties. The buckle has some oxidation.

The rare original Mattel Planet Of The Apes vinyl mask is also in excellent outstanding condition and came with this set. There are no rips or issues at all with it. I added the elastic band. Comes from a smoke free environment.

The toy does not fire a projectile and can not be modified to do so.
