Mattel Winchester Saddle Rifle No. Mattel "Official Winchester Saddle Gun" Stock No. 544 Second Version with Secret Trigger and Arched Cap Box Cover Works Well. Los Angeles, CA /Licensed by Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp. Plastic and metal toy rifle.

This large 33 long rifle loads and ejects Mattel play bullets (None included) and fires perforated roll caps (also NOT included). It has brown plastic stocks and a metal barrel and silver metal receiver covers.

This is the second version with an arched magazine dust cover and "secret" rapid fire trigger lever. This gun has been fired very little if not at all and still functions very well. It cocks and fires when the lever is worked. All-metal Mattel Play Bullets can be loaded in the side trap door and the gun then will eject them with each working of the lever (they DO NOT fire out of the barrel - that's the smaller Winchester carbine - NOT this gun).

Those play bullets would have been marked Mattel Inc. They were the same bullets that were used in the bullet-loading Fanner 50 cap pistol and this rifle was designed to use them. As mentioned, they were loaded in the trap door on the right hand side and forced down an internal tube with a spring.

As the lever is worked, they will come flying out of the top. This gun only fires perforated roll caps. The upper sliding cap magazine door is intact (must be slid way back while lever is in open position to pull up the cap magazine for loading roll caps) with instructions imprinted on top: "Use Perforated Roll Caps Only" and "Slide Back To Load Caps". The cap wheel is very clean with no cap wear but the guide/roll holder has some light tarnish/surface rust on top.

The hammer is very clean with no cap wear and fires with a good snap at each shot. This gun is single action and must be coked by working the lever for each shot unless you use the "secret" rapid fire trigger on the lever, which allows rapid-fire action. When used, a small piece of metal on the lever trips the trigger each time the lever is worked.

The silver finish on the lever, receiver plates, barrel band and trigger is clean with only light scuffs/scratches on the receiver plates. The front and rear brown "wood" finish plastic stocks have minor scuffs and some finish loss where young hands would have gripped it (see photos) but no cracks or breaks. This gun appears to have been played with but not with caps. The blued finish steel barrel has spots of loss, light surfacze corrosion under the finish and minor wear, especially at the front. The rear notch sight is unbroken and complete.

Also included is the original cardboard box which is missing both ends (see photos) but is still great for display. Cover has a piece of tape and tear on one end. Both ends are missing but otherwise suitable for diplay. Loading instruction are on back. This gun will make an excellent addition to any Mattel or Western Toy Gun collection.

Backyard Buckaroos/Collecting Western Toy Guns, J. This gun is pictured on page 328 and listed as R-72.

Note: Grid in pohotos is made up of 1 inch squares. This replica gun contains the colored markings required by law, including a permanently attached orange plug.
