Marx toy collector or vintage toy collector looking for something you don't see every day? Rare and hard to find from the 60's a Marx Civil War Centennial Musket. This neat little rifle is a scaled down copy of the 1863 Remington Zouave Rifle used by elite Union regiments during the Civil War. The side plate has the arsenal eagle and is inscribed U S Marx 1863.
It measures 29 in length, made of plastic, has no broken pieces or cracks. The really unusual design combines a single shot cap gun with a spring loading dart type gun. Instead of darts, they gave you plastic bullets that are loaded down the barrel with a ramrod until the spring clicks into position. Then you pull the trigger and pow!
The hammer falls on the single paper cap as the spring launches the bullet out of the barrel. Now there are two improvised improvements I have facilitated. The original ramrod, which was a simple wooden dowel, would protrude about two inches beyond the end of the barrel. This length is necessary to depress the spring enough for it to lock. Though necessary for operation it detracted from the appearance of the replica.
I fabricated a more realistic looking ramrod which can be left in place for display and I will provide a functional wooden one with three bullets for actual operation. This replica gun contains the colored markings required by law, including a permanently attached orange plug. The item "Vintage Marx Cap Gun" is in sale since Sunday, September 17, 2017.
